Eleven

When Hannah opened her eyes, she found herself staring into Cooper’s soulful gaze. Her heart immediately seized.

“Who am I?”

Cooper’s forehead creased. “Are you having an existential crisis?”

“No. I just … do you remember me?” Her voice cracked when asking the question, and she hated herself for feeling so weak.

“Hannah.” Cooper made an exasperated sound as he tugged her close, holding her tight. “Of course I remember you. You’re my whole world.”

“You can’t say that like it’s a given any longer,” Hannah argued. “You didn’t remember me yesterday.”

“And you will never know how sorry I am for that,” Cooper replied as he brushed her hair off her forehead. “I get why you’re upset—when I think about how I would feel if you were the one who didn’t remember me, it crushes my soul—but I’m not suddenly going to forget again. That was a very specific set of circumstances.”

“You can’t guarantee it won’t happen again,” Hannah argued. “We didn’t see it coming the first time.”

“Fair enough.” Cooper looked conflicted. “I can guarantee that I have never loved anything as much as I love you though. You’re my favorite person in the world, and I want to be with you now and forever. Can you please hold onto that instead of the other stuff?”

Hannah wanted to do that—for him and for herself—but she wasn’t certain if she was capable. “I’ll do my best,” she said finally. “No promises though. I can only try.”

“That works for me.” He tugged her in again and buried his face in her hair. “I can’t believe we slept all day. I hope that doesn’t mean we’re up all night. The last thing we need right now is to screw up our sleep cycles.”

Hannah’s face flushed hot. “Oh, well, I wasn’t up here with you the entire afternoon.” She sounded guilty, even though she knew it wasn’t fair or rational, and when Cooper drew back to look at her face, she already had an apology on her lips. “I didn’t want to wake you up, so I went over to the apartment to keep sorting through Abigail’s stuff.”

“You don’t have to justify how you spent your time to me,” Cooper assured her. “You don’t owe me an apology.”

“I didn’t apologize.”

“It kind of sounded like you did.”

Hannah lifted her shoulders in a shrug. “I’m not having the best day,” she admitted. “Actually, I’m not having the best week.”

“Well, hopefully tomorrow will be better.” He stroked his hands over her slim back, frowning when he felt a small shiver run through her body. “Did something happen?”

“A few somethings,” Hannah admitted. “I ran into Abigail for starters. She told me what happened between her and Lorelai.”

“Oh, yeah?” Cooper looked interested despite himself. “Finally a story I’m not familiar with.”

“Yeah, well, don’t get attached to this story because I’m not sure it’s true.” Hannah managed a grimace. “So, according to Abigail, Lorelai ran off with my grandfather.”

Cooper was taken aback. “Um … that’s not the story I heard. I thought he died.”

“Well, there are a few things going on here.
